Auction Sheet

One of the main features of Japanese auctions is well-established pre-auction inspection of all vehicles offered for sale. Before the auction, every car passes through the procedure surface inspection by the auction expert. No special equipment is used in this procedure. Expert fills in the “auction sheet” which includes car specifications, mileage, damage marks, a list of additional equipment, exterior and interior condition. Each car gets its own overall auction grade based on this data.

The car may have minor damage, interior and exterior, not written in the auction list, due to the influence of human factor. However, in case of overestimation, expert can be fired, and auction can loose its license. It also explains and absolutely authentic mileage figures. So we can expect more understated estimates as a result of stricter controls. Therefore, Japanese auctions data is usually very reliable.

In addition, several photos are made during the inspection. Usually two photos: front-side and rear-side. Some times there is also an interior photo too.

Each car has its own unique identification number. The system of symbols and a list of parameters specified in the auction sheet makes it possible to obtain sufficient information to make a decision about buying a car. (the terminology used in the auction sheet available here.)
